It’s almost that time for students to go back to school! Most kids and college students will finally be able to go back in person. With much excitement around, there may also be some concerns considering the pandemic. Dorm life is one of those concerns and the indoor air quality might be on the top of that list! Below we list a few tips on how to improve your personal spaces’ air quality.
Academic institutions are responsible for maintaining a healthy environment, including the cooling and circulation systems. A quick inspection by the student and parent should be enough to determine its effectiveness. If you and your family have doubts, we highly recommend you bring attention to the staff. There are some studies that suggest clean air improves study ability and retention, so don’t hesitate to say something!
First, invest in a good fan. Most college dorms are quite small and have bad air circulation. By placing a fan in your personal space, it controls excess humidity and provides circulated air. A cool comfortable study and sleeping environment will help any student.
Second, an investment in a good quality air purifier would be beneficial as well. If you or even your roommates suffer from asthma or severe allergies, an air purifier will do wonders for you all. A system like this will be of great help in keeping unwanted bacteria and pollutants out of your space.
A third and easy way to ventilate your dorm space is to open a window. Opening your windows when it is cool outside would allow fresh air into your home. When temperatures are warmer, you may want to skip this step because the pollen count might be too high. Those with allergies should be cautious when opening windows. This can be an alternative method from purchasing an air purifier.
Last but not least, perhaps you could purchase a few “air cleaning” plants as a part of your dorm decor. Plants like the Spider Plant, English Ivy, Peace Lily, and even Aloe Vera. These low-maintenance plants can improve the air quality significantly. Houseplants release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide making your home feel fresh and healthy! This not only freshens up the air, but it also eliminates harmful toxins. So grab a plant and go green! (Go white! hehe)
Moving your student into their college dorm can be stressful and most likely a little emotional. Indoor air quality is just one of the many things to think about when getting ready for college life. We hope these easy, fun tips help you on your college journey!
