Dryer Vent Cleaning is Not a DIY Project

Dryer Vent Cleaning is Not a DIY Project

Have you ever had that temptation to pick up the phone and call a friend or relative when something needed to be fixed in your home? Or have you ever felt confident enough to take on a maintenance task yourself? While there are definitely some issues that can be solved with the help of some YouTube, cleaning and maintaining your dryer vent is not one of them. It may sound easy enough for you to perform a DIY with your dryer vent, however, it’s a little more complex. Here are some reasons you should hire a dryer vent expert.

Not a DIY Project

There are dryer vent cleaning kits you can purchase, however, these kits aren’t always the best. These kits come with flexible rods that contain a brush on one end and power drill on the other. You connect the brush to one rod, then add more as needed to clean the entire line. Then once that’s in place you add the power drill to make the brush spin. The issue here? Dryer vents are 30-40 feet long and contain plenty of twists and turns and the rods provided are not compatible. This could lead to the rods snapping and being stuck in the vents, creating a bigger hazard.

Another thing that can go wrong with DIY kits is that sometimes the bristles can puncture the vent. This can leave you with holes throughout your vent system, allowing hot, humid air from the dryer to escape into your laundry room. This damp heat will eventually cause mold and increase the risk of a house fire.

Bob Can’t Fix it

Dryer vents come in all shapes and sizes and each one has a unique issue when you approach it for repair. Your local handyman whom you trust with other maintenance may be unaware of the complexity of the ducts. Accidents happen and when an accident happens with your dryer vents it can become a pretty penny to fix. It is always best to not put your friends and family in that position of a broken dryer vent.
