In today’s modern society, many families can enjoy the luxury of having air conditioning and heating in their homes. Back in the day HVAC systems were nonexistent, causing families to adapt to the heat.   1. Medicines rely on cooling equipment! If it weren’t for air conditioning, some of our modern medicines would have never existed! The cool temperatures create and preserve many different medicines.

  2. Willis Carrier built the first modern- day air conditioner in 1902. As an American engineer, Carrier invented the Apparatus for Treating Air. His magnificent invention became patented in 1906.

  3. Back then, human bodies were capable of handling extreme heat. Based on research, our bodies have adapted to a modern society and are no longer able to withstand higher temperatures.

  4. Summer became a break from school due to the heat! Since air conditioning was unavailable, school in the summer was not mandatory. Matter of fact, families would remove their kids from school in the summer in an attempt to escape the heat

  5. Another fun HVAC fact is that Herbert Hoover was the first president to enjoy air conditioning in the White House! He served as president from 1929-1933.

  6. Here’s a fun HVAC fact, the Romans were the first to use any kind of air heating system. They also had heated floors in the winter.

  7. The first fully air conditioned home was built in a mansion in Minneapolis in 1913. The owner, Charles Gates, unfortunately died before ever getting to use it.

  8. The very first glimpse of the modern HVAC industry came in 1758 when Ben Franklin and John Hadley discovered that evaporating alcohol and other similar substances cools down objects enough to bring water to freezing temperatures.

  9. Before having furnaces, homeowners relied on fireplaces to warm up their homes. Some homes today still enjoy the use of a fireplace. 

  10. Engineer Henry Galson went on to develop a more compact, inexpensive version of the window air conditioner and set up production lines for several manufacturers. In 1947, stores sold 43,000 window air conditioning units. 

  11. In fact, air temperature is so important to us that 48 percent of all energy consumption in American homes is a result of cooling and heating, according to the Energy Information Administration.

  12. Home cooling systems got smaller after H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman filed a patent for an air conditioning unit that could be placed on a window ledge. The units hit the market in 1932 but were not widely purchased due to their high cost.
